Shotcrete Walls

High-performance shotcrete walls for ground stabilisation, slope retention, and tunnel support

Shotcrete (or mock rock) is simple to apply and renders a high-quality finish in both Civil Infrastructure, commercial and residential projects

Shotcrete, also known as sprayed concrete or mock rock, is a highly versatile method of applying high-strength concrete to irregular or hard-to-reach surfaces. While it is commonly used in architectural applications, at Ground Stabilisation Systems (GSS), we specialise in shotcrete applications for civil, infrastructure, and mining projects, where performance, strength, and durability matter most.

Our team delivers engineered shotcrete retaining walls and shotcrete wall systems designed to provide long-lasting ground stabilisation, slope control, and protective linings across various high-risk sites. Whether working in tunnels, excavations, or steep terrain, shotcrete offers a flexible, cost-effective alternative to conventional retaining walls and formwork.

How it works

Shotcreting involves using compressed air to pneumatically project a specially designed concrete or mortar mix at high velocity onto a prepared surface. This process not only places the material but also compacts it simultaneously, creating a strong, uniform layer that adheres to a wide variety of substrates, including vertical faces, overhead sections, and irregular formations.

In Australia, shotcrete is widely used in applications where traditional pouring methods are impractical or too labour-intensive. GSS has applied shotcrete across countless complex environments, particularly in:

  • Tunnels and underground construction
  • Slope stabilisation and erosion control
  • Mining and in-shoring excavations
  • Civil works and road infrastructure
  • Foundations and structural overlays
  • Protective facings for cuttings, batters, and embankments.

With minimal site preparation, shotcrete walls can be constructed quickly and safely, reducing project timelines and keeping critical infrastructure and civil construction on schedule.

Types of shotcreting techniques

GSS uses high-performance spraying equipment to deliver consistent pressure and coverage, ensuring a dense, uniform finish across the wall or slope.

Two main techniques are used:

  1. Dry-mix shotcrete, where the dry material is mixed with water at the nozzle
  1. Wet-mix shotcrete, where pre-mixed concrete is pumped and sprayed

Both methods offer excellent strength, adhesion and rapid setting, making shotcrete ideal for stabilising slopes, forming temporary support structures, and creating architectural finishes in exposed areas.

Depending on the project, we can apply different finishes, including gun, sponge, screed, wood float, steel trowel, or sculpted mock rock for aesthetic integration in visible spaces.

Strength, flexibility and safety in every application

One of shotcrete’s key benefits is its ability to conform to any shape, making it highly effective in tight spaces, irregular surfaces, or sites where poured formwork would be impractical. It’s commonly used as a temporary support during excavation and as a permanent structural layer for retaining walls, tunnel linings, and foundation surfaces.

Our shotcrete solutions are designed to manage lateral loads, resist erosion, and improve safety across high-risk zones. They are built using either traditional steel reinforcement or, where appropriate, advanced fibre-reinforced mixes that eliminate the need for rebar, reducing material costs and speeding up installation.

These shotcrete walls are engineered for long-term durability, with performance tailored to each site’s specific load-bearing and environmental conditions.

Shotcrete in Australia: engineered performance from GSS

With decades of experience across civil construction, mining, and major infrastructure works, GSS is trusted to deliver high-quality shotcrete solutions across Australia. Our crews have completed projects in some of the most complex and remote locations, applying shotcrete walls with precision and care.

We bring deep technical expertise to every project, ensuring the right mix, method, and equipment are used to achieve optimal results. Whether you’re reinforcing a tunnel, stabilising a cutting, or managing a large-scale excavation, our shotcrete application team can tailor a solution that balances performance, cost, and constructability.

We know that effective shotcrete retaining solutions rely on more than just material. They require skill, planning, and attention to detail. From site evaluation through to spraying and final finish, we provide end-to-end support to ensure every wall is safe, stable, and built to last.
