Gabion Basket Retaining Wall Systems

Gabion walls are commonly implemented in areas with unstable or soft soil, like riverbanks, watercourses and locations with heavy rainfall

Engineered gabion basket retaining walls for civil, mining and infrastructure projects

Gabion retaining walls offer a proven, flexible solution for stabilising slopes, managing erosion and supporting heavy loads in challenging site conditions. At Ground Stabilisation Systems (GSS), we specialise in the design, construction and installation of large-scale gabion basket retaining wall systems for councils, mining companies, and civil contractors across Australia.

Unlike residential walls, our gabion wall systems are purpose-built for high-performance results in complex environments, including flood-prone regions, steep slopes, and remote or weather-affected sites. We deliver fully engineered retaining structures that provide long-term stability and withstand significant lateral earth pressure and water exposure.

What is a gabion basket retaining wall?

A gabion retaining wall is a gravity-based structure made from modular wire mesh cages—or gabion baskets—filled with rock. These cages are stacked and tied together to form a mass that can retain soil, resist sliding, and allow natural drainage. The wall’s integrity is based on weight, friction, and interlocking strength rather than rigid material like concrete, making gabions highly suitable for areas with moisture, voids, or ground movement.

GSS has been building gabion retaining walls in Australia for decades, particularly along the East Coast, where sites often experience extreme rainfall and difficult terrain. Our systems are especially effective around rivers, drainage lines, and slopes, where water and environmental movement can lead to rapid soil erosion or structural failure.

Flexible design for diverse environments

One of the key advantages of gabion wall systems is their ability to be adapted to suit a wide range of applications and site conditions. Gabion baskets can be fabricated to different dimensions—from 300mm to two metres or more in height—and are filled on-site with locally sourced rocks to match structural and aesthetic needs.

This flexibility makes gabions ideal for:

  • Slope and embankment stabilisation
  • Road and rail infrastructure
  • Watercourse and riverbank protection
  • Drainage culverts and flood zones
  • Bridge abutments and hardstand areas
  • Mining access roads and haul routes
  • Erosion control in civil and industrial sites.

Whether you’re working with curved, stepped, or irregular surfaces, gabion structures can be constructed to conform to the natural terrain. They are especially effective when a rigid retaining wall might crack or fail under earth movement or hydraulic pressure.

Engineered for strength, drainage and durability

GSS uses heavy-duty woven wire mesh to build gabion basket retaining walls that withstand the harshest Australian conditions. The material is galvanised or PVC-coated for corrosion resistance, and the infill rocks are carefully selected to maximise interlocking stability and minimise internal voids.

The baskets are tied together and positioned in staggered courses, much like a block wall, to distribute pressure evenly and create a unified structure. Once installed, the wall acts as a permeable mass, allowing surface water and groundwater to pass through freely, preventing pressure build-up behind the wall and reducing the risk of failure.

This ability to both retain earth and shed moisture makes gabion systems ideal for projects involving:

  • Saturated ground or high water tables
  • Seasonal flooding or heavy rainfall
  • Dynamic construction zones
  • Environmentally sensitive sites.

Each wall is designed based on geotechnical parameters, including soil type, height, surcharge loads, drainage requirements, and anticipated movement. This ensures long-term performance and compliance with relevant engineering and environmental standards.

Why choose gabion retaining walls for large-scale projects?

Gabion wall systems offer a range of benefits for commercial, industrial and Civil infrastructure applications:

  • Durability – resistant to weather, water, and mechanical impact
  • Adaptability – suitable for uneven, sloped or curved sites
  • Drainage – naturally permeable to reduce water build-up and hydrostatic pressure
  • Environmentally friendly – can support native vegetation and allow for natural integration
  • Cost-effective – minimal maintenance and locally sourced material reduce lifetime costs
  • Proven track record – used globally for over 50 years on major infrastructure projects.

GSS builds every gabion wall to meet site-specific challenges—whether you need a 300mm drainage solution along a slope or a multi-tiered, 2m+ rock basket retaining wall in a high-traffic industrial zone.

Comprehensive gabion retaining wall installation

Our gabion installation process is handled entirely in-house by qualified crews and experienced project managers. We handle everything from foundation preparation and basket placement to rock infill and structural tying.

Each project follows strict quality assurance processes, including:

  • Site preparation and levelling
  • Staged wall construction and alignment checks
  • Rock packing for strength and appearance
  • Geotextile integration (where required)
  • Post-install inspections and documentation.

We also offer ongoing support for wall extensions, upgrades, and tested repairs, ensuring your gabion retaining wall installation meets future site demands as your project evolves.

Our testimonials

Jeff Breen – Armidale Regional Council, Project Manager

The GSS team worked well with all stakeholders to ensure the landslip remediations stayed on budget and program. GSS provided a good quality project with little impact to the local community. I would not hesitate to recommend them in the future for similar works.

Ahmed Gomaa – Heritage Stoneworks, Project Manager

The overall performance of the contractor was good, they were helpful, supportive, and professional. The quality of their work was good. They managed our requirements, as well as our stakeholders, in a timely manner. The contractor complied with the Heritage Architectural requirements and maintained the heritage significance of the rock face. GSS will be recommended to handle similar projects with the division in the future.  GSS provided a superior service and were able to keep the Project on time and on budget.

Jon Hines – MC Group, Project Manager

Ground Stabilisation Systems installed approx. 1,000sqm of geowebbing including rock anchoring to our Billy’s Lookout Estate. Peter and the team completed the project in a professional, reliable and safe manner to present a quality product. I would not hesitate to recommend Ground Stabilisation Systems.

Lizzie Attwood – Coffs Harbour City Council

GSS performed soil nailing, rock nailing, shotcrete, steel cable and mesh bank protection systems. Some of these works were over water and all were conducted with minimal environmental impact. We would have no hesitation in using Ground Stabilisation Systems on future works.

Troy Gould – KCE, Project Manager

It was great to work with an organisation that was on site when agreed, completed their works with the agreed time frames and went over and above to ensure that not only KCE but our client was happy with all works to be carried out.

Elena Kuzman – Abril Building Solutions, Project Manager

We found GSS to be a trustworthy and valuable company, with the ability to deliver a high quality of work, under difficult circumstances, and very tight deadlines. Although many obstacles were presented throughout the project, they still managed to meet the requirements and handed over the project as per the anticipated schedule. Peter’s approach is evident in all aspects of the work including quoting, communication, availability and customer service to both our company and our customers
